The team of fertility specialists at Pacific Surrogacy & Egg Donation are committed to helping couples and individuals in the greater Los Angeles area start the families of their dreams. This can be achieved through a wide variety of treatments to address male factor, female factor, and mixed causes of infertility.

Egg recipients play an important role in all fertility treatments. We'd like to take this opportunity to go over the basics of egg recipients and what role they play in assisted reproduction procedures.

Defining the Term "Egg Recipient"

An egg recipient is a person who receives an embryo to carry to term, most often as part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. This can refer to a woman who has her own eggs fertilized as part of IVF, a woman who receives an egg from an egg donor, or a surrogate carrier to volunteers to carry an embryo to term for another couple or individual.

How This Works with Egg Donation

When it comes to egg donation, the egg donor can be selected through a combination of physical traits, personality traits, and so forth. This can be done from a database, or the eggs may come from a loved one.

These matters can be discussed as part of the fertility treatment process. We can work with you to help you make the right decisions about this facet of fertility treatment.

How This Works with Surrogate Carriers

Surrogate carriers are often used in fertility treatments when a woman is unable to carry a child to term on her own. This may be due to health risks for the mother and child, such as a potential for miscarriage. A surrogate carrier may be a loved one or a woman a couple/individual does not know who is willing to carry a child to term.

We will be more than happy to go over these matters in more detail during your visit to the practice.

Preparing for Embryo Transfer

An important part of embryo transfer is preparing the recipient to receive the embryo. If a donor or surrogate carrier is used, it's important that the egg recipient be synced with the menstrual cycle of the egg donor. This process of menstrual cycle synchronization helps ensure that the process will be as successful as possible.

In addition to syncing menstrual cycles, the egg recipient will also undergo a process of uterine preparation. This helps prepare an egg recipient's uterus for receiving the embryo, which helps ensure proper implantation of the embryo along the patient's uterine wall. This will typically involved the use of fertility drugs that may be taken orally or be injected.

What Egg Recipients Can Expect During Embryo Transfer

The embryo transfer process typically takes around 30 minutes to perform. During this procedure, embryos are introduced into the uterus using a catheter to bypass the cervix. Some discomfort is common, but it is generally mild. Patients will often be provided with additional fertility drugs to take after the embryo transfer to help boost the chances of successful pregnancy.

What Egg Recipients Can Expect After Embryo Transfer

After embryo transfer, it can take about 11 to 16 days before pregnancy can be confirmed. The success rate/live birth rate is roughly 54 percent. Egg recipients are instructed to use a pregnancy test after 11 days to determine if the process was successful. A second test can be performed by our fertility specialists to confirm successful pregnancy.

If the cycle is unsuccessful, parents and/or egg recipients have many options to consider going forward to help ensure a successful pregnancy.
