Egg donors are an excellent option to consider addressing a number of fertility issues. Yet for the treatment to work, synchronizing cycles between donor and recipient is necessary. Let's cover the basics of this right now.
Egg Donors Can Be Crucial in Helping You Start a Family
Egg donors are women who are selected by a couple or individual to provide viable eggs of their own when a woman's own eggs are not viable for successful pregnancy and live birth. This is an especially important consideration for female infertility matters.
Egg donors are typically young and healthy women in the prime of their reproductive years, and their eggs can be selected based on a number of physical characteristics (e.g., height, eye color, hair color) as well as psychological traits (e.g., IQ, career).
Once an egg donor is selected, the eggs can be fertilized via in vitro fertilization (IVF) and then placed into a recipient's womb to be carried to term. As part of this process, cycle synchronization must take place.
What does "cycle synchronization" mean in the context of egg donation?
Cycle synchronization simply means syncing up the menstrual cycles of the egg donor and the egg recipient. Fertility drugs or contraceptives are used to ensure that cycles are matched between the two.
Why is synchronizing cycles so important?
Synchronizing cycles helps improve the chances of successful pregnancy and live birth. This allows eggs to be retrieved from the egg donor, fertilized in the lab, incubated to promote cellular division, and placed into the recipient without any delays in the process. This is often preferable to using eggs that have been cryopreserved, when possible, though cryopreserved eggs from donors can still be used successfully.
What to Expect During the Synchronization Process?
Egg recipients will be instructed to take birth control pills at a time specified by their fertility doctors to help with the synchronization process. At a certain point, the recipient will be asked to stop taking birth control and use other fertility drugs to prepare the uterine lining for the fertilized egg.
For the egg donor, fertility drugs will be used to stimulate follicles and help trigger ovulation and aid in the egg retrieval process.
